OK everybody, hang on tight… LIVE TRACKING is here!
We are thrilled to be rolling out a new service called RunKeeper Live. Whether you are heading out to attempt your longest run ever, gearing up for a big race, or just wanting your loved ones to know where you are and that you are safe, now you can enable people to track your outdoor fitness activities live on the web while you are doing them.
And the best part is it is really easy to do! All you need to do is go to your RunKeeper sharing settings on the web and click the box to enable live tracking.
Anyone viewing your public profile will be alerted when you start your activity, and you can email your public profile link to anyone you like to let them know! Remember, your public profile is found at: http://www.runkeeper.com/user/<username> …where <username> should be replaced with the RunKeeper username you selected. You can select a username in your web profile settings.
Initially, this functionality is available exclusively to FitnessReports subscribers. We will evaluate how RunKeeper Live fits into the broader RunKeeper service as we grow.
For a demo of how it works, check out this video made by our own Tom Boates, Director of User Experience at RunKeeper:
We can’t wait to hear your feedback on this exciting new service! And like everything else we put out there, the plan is to rapidly iterate and make improvements to RunKeeper Live as the feedback comes streaming in. We are already hard at work on several improvements as we speak!
Enjoy everybody! And as always, even more great updates coming soon.

Fantastic addition gang. Love it!!
Is there only for those with the fitnessreports subscription?
Couldn’t enable it on my account…

Please open up to all users, or at least RK Pro.
Really cool. Looking forward for this one! RunKeeper rock!
Just to clarify – we already had live updating, of a sort. My husband could go to my profile and see my progress on my long run including pictures. Is that still available? Has that now been turned off for those of us not getting Fitness Reports? It’s been really useful for us. Is it just that it won’t have the fancy auto-updating and blinky lights and such?
Kris, nothing was taken away, RunKeeper Live was added as an optional service (part of FitnessReports, at the moment). The basic RunKeeper offering will continue to behave as it did before.

Can we pulled out the map & the RunKeeper live out of the http://runkeeper.com/user/username URL ? (by iframe-ing it or other method)
This is fantastic. I always tell my wife when i go on bicycling ride that lasts up to 2hrs, she can just check where i am on the map and decide to call me or not or meet meet for a shopping when i am about o reach a mall..
This is really cool.

That’s crazy… I’m looking forward to try this.

if RK open some sort of API (at least for the RK Pro user), i’m sure there will be more cool web apps build based on RK
hi jason
RKP Live looks cool….but its a bit disappointing that RKP Pro users aren’t yet able to use it.
All in all, the RKP Pro version isn’t really offering a lot over the free version. The FAQ has been saying “More great premium features coming soon” but eh, well, it’s been saying that for quite a wee while……;)
That said, congrats on a great product and the innovative features which you’re building into the product and the website/community.
One possible new feature which might be of interest is that when you finish & upload a run, you show a list of runners who have also completed a run in that area over the past week along with their distance/times – it might help to develop the community side a little more.
Keep on keeping on,
m.
Excellent addition!! Now only ONE more piece of the puzzle remains … overlay a race course route on the map so a runner’s progress can be tracked during a race. For example, the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon course would be overlaid on the map. As I run the OKC marathon, anyone can see my progress on the route map.
As far as I know about it, a .gpx file would be uploaded to the map. Or is this already possible?
This is really a significant accomplishment for running, for spectators, and for RunKeeper. It really is a bit of running history here. It is very significant.
Can I use runkeeper with my htc pro from sprint. I can use igoogle and have gps tech?
Tim
Ah, this is awesome. I wish it were included free or with the Pro version. It has great safety benefits. Something that’s coming up quite often here in San Diego lately.
Awesome! Now I can track my prey in real time. No more watching their schedules and then wait around in dark alleys for them to pass by. I can stalk them live and even track them! This will save so much time when I go on killing sprees.
But seriously guys, I love the idea of having my friends and family able to track me. The problem is, it is more than just my friends and family that will have access to this and my other information if I ever chose to share my information. This is just trouble waiting to happen.
Please add a feature that allows us to share our information with only the people we trust. The only option we have right now is completely Private or completely Public.
Great tools, great products. Keep up the good work!
very nice… but i MUST be able to be locked down. I would like to show my wife and family where i am… but not the whole world.
Great product, keep up the good work but please keep us safe.
Pingback: etc: RunKeeper, our favorite GPS running app for iPhone, has introduced a new live tracking feature. Friends and family can now keep track of your progress online as it’s happening. | Techdare
Now we just need to get this app ported over to the Android platform so I can use it on my Droid! Are there any plans in the near future for this?
Thanks!
Matt
Why, yes, I believe that there are.
Jason
Please let everyone use this, not just subscribers to fitnessreport, what is that anyway?
This is a fantastic feature, especially for solo riders who want their family/friends to know where they are for both safety and convenience. Please add this as an option for Pro users. Tying it to Fitness reports that a lot of people don’t need seems like you’re just trying to make us pay an extra monthly fee. If it has to be monthly please separate it out from Fitness Reports and charge less. Thanks!
I try it this evening. Before I go out I let friends know the function.
I works fantastic. Very nice.
It it also nice to know that people can sit home and look at my training. It is near the same feeling to training alone in the forest that I training in front of people, I must go on, not take a pause.
I like it.
This is great! For us living in rural parts of Norway, attacks by dangerous people is not the issue. But hiking or skiing out in the forest/mountain alone is now a little bit safer. My wife can actually check out where I am at any time. Great!

Nice! I’m looking forward to using this in races, so my family in the States can “watch” me run!

Is it just me or is it only updating once every km?
As someone who goes on long solo runs in the city each and every Saturday (1-2 hours) and has a wife who worries the entire time, I have been scanning the universe for this exact service for months. I knew it was technically possible, but no one seemed to be putting the functionality together.
So kudos for, literally, answering my wife’s prayers. And while I was disappointed to find this not included with the RK Pro I already own (and just updated) I do find $19.99/year a small price to pay for not getting phone calls at Mile 12.
Great feature BUT…
why is this not available for Pro users????
…and then integration with uStreamTV and we have ourselves a broadcast!

This is a great feature, I run at 5am every morning but the park I run in is dark and renound for murders and other things (touch wood). If some thing happens to me then My family at least know where I am or if something happens then It keeps sending data so they can track my whereabouts.
But I realised that this is just for report people (even though I bought pro
).

Really want to try this but I have asked a question on the general questions forum asking for clarification of the effect live tracking has on battery life. Russell
No effect on battery life.
Jason
I really think this feature should be a part of RunKeeper Pro. It would also be nice to add more stats like current speed and average speed to a screen. Thanks for the continual updates.
RunKeeper is a great product. But, I’m disappointed that Live GPS tracking isn’t part of RunKeeper Pro. I feel like we’re being nickel-and-dimed.
A great feature would be a embed code (like youtube) for the live window so you can post it on a blog, website or whatever.
Plase, make this feature aviable for RK pro, be aware of the competition, there are some apps that offer this with no extra cost at all.
Best regards and keep up the good work!
